On November 6, a lecture titled "National Literary Masters Reflect on Guizhou: The Enlightenment of Literature" was held at Guizhou University. The event was part of the Humanities Lecture Series of "Xishan Dialogues" and featured renowned writer Dong Xi (Tian Dailin), author of multiple books of fiction and winner of Lu Xun Literature Prize. GZU Vice President Chen Xiangsheng delivered a welcome speech. The lecture was hosted by Professor Tan Dexing, Dean of the College of Literature.
In his remarks, Vice President Chen Xiangsheng warmly welcomed Mr. Dong Xi. He highlighted the university’s century-long history and its strong literary and humanistic tradition, noting the passion for reading and writing among faculty and students. He expressed his hope that attendees would gain valuable insights and inspiration from Dong Xi's lecture.
In his lecture, Mr. Dong Xi recounted his early years immersed in China’s “Four Great Classical Novels” and other experiences in his literary journey. He emphasized that “writing begins with reading” and shared practical advice with the audience. He encouraged them to visit the places where authors lived to better understand the worlds depicted in their works, stating that “if we aspire to fully comprehend great literature, we must experience first-hand the environments that shaped the authors and their stories.”
Mr. Dong Xi also shared inspiring anecdotes, reminding students and faculty that only with steadfast faith and unyielding perseverance can one create truly exceptional works. He concluded with a powerful metaphor: “The more we strive to reach for sunlight, the deeper we must draw nourishment from the soil.”
After the lecture, students were invited to engage with Mr. Dong Xi, asking questions and sharing their thoughts. The author happily offered his answers and views.
