On November 12, the Guizhou University (GZU) stop of the National Lecture Tour themed "Outstanding Journalists in the New Era" took place on the West Campus. The event brought together Tang Benwen, Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission of Guizhou University, Gong Wenjing, Director of the News Release Office of the Publicity Department of the CPC Guizhou Provincial Committee, the tour speakers and over 300 faculty members and students. Organized by the All-China Journalists Association and theNational Leading Group for the Three Moral Educational Activities of the News Front, the event was co-hosted by Publicity Department and School of Media and Communication at Guizhou University.
Tang Benwen welcomed the speakers and commended the lecture tour for its timely and significant contributions to the field of journalism. He emphasized the vital role of journalists in the new era in telling China’s stories and amplifying its voice on the global stage. Recognizing Guizhou University’s deep historical roots and broad societal influence, he reaffirmed the university’s commitment to nurturing journalism talents equipped with a strong sense of social responsibility and professional expertise. Tang encouraged students, through this platform, to deepen their understanding of journalism, enhance their sense of mission, engage in practical experiences, and sharpen their sensitivity to news while refining their reporting skills to drive innovation in journalism.
The tour speakers delivered insightful lectures, sharing their professional journeys and perspectives:
Yan Jingwen, a reporter from Guangdong Radio and Television Station, presented Documenting the Critical Link of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, sharing her experience in reporting the stories about the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link (consisting of one underwater tunnel, two bridges and two artificial islands). She highlighted the importance of forging emotional connections with audiences to authentically capture the stories of the new era.
Zhou Yuan, a reporter with Xinhua News Agency, delivered South of the Earth: Chronicling Change and Continuity, recounting his 168-day journey alongside China’s fourth Antarctic expedition. His firsthand account illuminated the nation’s remarkable progress in polar research.
Song Shuang from Xiakedao Group of People’s Daily Overseas Edition shared her experiences covering major global and domestic events. Through her lecture, she encouraged students to embrace responsibility and resilience in the rapidly evolving media landscape.
Chen Yizhao of Guangxi Daily explored the theme Becoming a Journalist Loved by the People, reflecting on his grassroots reporting experiences and emphasizing the power of authentic storytelling in connecting with communities.
Ma Yue, from Tieling Integrated Media Center in Liaoning Province, shared a moving account of a young entrepreneur’s journey to revitalizing her hometown, demonstrating the journalist's role in uncovering inspiring narratives.
Li Yanjun, an investigative journalist from Guizhou Radio and Television Station, recounted his undercover investigations into social issues, including seafood market irregularities and illegal cooking oil practices. He inspired students to use journalism as a force for social change.
Jiang Na of Farmers’ Daily presented Getting to the Closest Scene, emphasizing the courage and dedication required to uncover compelling stories and the importance of proximity to capture the truth.
Chen Minxiang from Sichuan Daily discussed Why Go to Dangerous Scenes?, recounting his experience reporting on forest fires. He highlighted the journalist's responsibility to face challenges head-on and prioritize authenticity in storytelling.
After the lectures, a discussion session was held in Xianzhen Building, where guest speakers and students engaged in an in-depth dialogue on overcoming challenges in journalism, maintaining professional ideals, and refining their journalistic skills.
