On March 13, Guizhou University inaugurated its 2024 Spring Semester with a "First Class" session held at the Xishan Theater on the West Campus. The session, hosted by Yang Wei, GZU Secretary of CPC Committee, featured distinguished speakers who delivered inspiring speeches.
Themed "Let the Light of Faith Guide Us," the session began with Yang Wei sharing stories ofPresident Xi Jinping’s youth, highlighting his resilience and determination. She recounted President Xi's care and encouragement for university students, reflecting on the rapid changes in China since 1984 and the country's progress under Xi's leadership. Yang emphasized the broad opportunities and bright future awaiting the current generation, urging them to strive to achieve their potential.
Yang Wei recommended two books, "Xi Jinping's Seven Years as an Educated Youth" and "Xi Jinping and His University Friends," encouraging students to draw inspiration from Xi's formative years. She shared three key insights: adversity is a valuable life asset, learning is the ladder to progress, and enduring hardship is essential for growth. She urged students to embrace challenges, pursue knowledge diligently, and willingly face difficulties to grow and succeed.
Pan Xuejun, Dean of the College of Agriculture, shared his journey with walnut farming, illustrating how knowledge can transform destinies and communities. He encouraged students to integrate their studies with national development and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, emphasizing the potential in rural areas and mountain agriculture.
Qin Yongbin, Dean of the College of Computer Science and Technology, discussed the innovation journey in Guizhou’s big data research, highlighting the importance of knowledge and skills in driving technological advancements. He urged students to cultivate innovation through practice and actively engage in research and development.
Zhou Zhijiang, a GZU alumnus and Deputy Director of the Guiyang Confucius Academy Cultural Communication Center, spoke on the value of embracing challenges and learning through hardship. He stressed the importance of making the most of university life as a transition from youth to adulthood and from school to society, encouraging students to seek knowledge and experiences beyond textbooks.
Associate Professor Yang Manyun from the Psychological Health Education and Counseling Center recounted her transformation from stage fright to confidence during her graduate studies, advocating for stepping out of one's comfort zone as a path to growth and self-improvement. She encouraged students to manage their emotions, strengthen their minds and bodies, and contribute to societal progress.
Cai Jia, a master's student from the College of Media, shared her experience in the "Challenge Cup,"where she and her team won awards. She highlighted the hard work and determination required, encouraging students to face challenges head-on and pursue their dreams with confidence and resilience.
During the "First Class," the six speakers, along with student representatives, performed a recitation of "The Ode to the 120 Years of Guizhou University."
